MemberAugust 11, 2024 at 12:14 pm in reply to: Towing Recs for 21ft Bay Boat – Your thoughts and experience?I really appreciate all the feed back on this towing issue! Getting opinions on matters like towing from experienced LAFB members and Captain Devin is just another reason why I enjoy being a member of LAFB. Since I originally made this post I have done a little more research on this somewhat complicated towing issue and combined with the comments and suggestion from your replies things have clear up a little. There are so many trims and package on these trucks that for someone like me that has been away from owning a towing vehicle for a long period of time it can be a little frustrating.
I had originally over look the 2WD with locking differential and was not going to consider 4X4 but now I am headed in either direction….
Once again, THANKS

Thanks, that’s good to hear and the second time the FG knot has been suggested in this post!!
What knots are you tying on the jig head /hook end?

Yeh ya right! The combinations of casting distance, sensitivity and color I don’t want to go back either.
I say color because my vision is not what it use to be and certain colors in braid make it easier to see line movement.

Yes, 30lb test braid equivalent of 10lb mono diameter.
I definitley have not paid enough attention to re-tying knots before a new trip or lines drying out and losing strength. My equipment is storage my garage but obliviously no temperature control. Considering I only make a few fishing trips a year that would make a make sense.
Two of my bait casters are all fluro or mono and the other one is braid to fluro or mono.
I like braid with fluro or mono leader on my three spinng reels especially for casting distance. I use 15 or 20lb test leader on the spinning reels which will handle just about any fish I would hook up with but if I snag will it will break off at the uni knot.
Some of the advice in the replies of this post may help but broken lines and snags will certainly remain a part of fishing.

Ha Daniel, I am right with you on all your points! I think I have a couple different brands of fluro and mono and have been using Power Pro Super 8 Slick v2 braid.
Do you know what brands help you with the problem?
You are so right, with certain setups once you go braid it soooooo hard to go back and I don’t think I ever will! No need to get into it but there are so many benefits….. Thanks

That’s some excellent points, so thanks for the feedback. Your point about “braid is always going to “bite” into the fluro/mono, where your hook end is being tied to a smooth, round piece of steel”is a really good one because I almost never break off at the hook end. I have only fished the trestles 3 or 4 times and almost always used all fluro or mono with a few exceptions like drop shot and carolina rig.
So there are times in other places when I want to use other setups to maybe reduce the fight time.
I have not tried the FG knot but I may look into it.

As I mentioned in my post that SUV is certainly not ideal for towing my boat. I think the front wheel drive along with the type of tires on vehicle are certainly an issue. I also think that the 400 to 500 lbs of tongue weight on that light weight rear end may possible reduce some front wheel drive traction, just a thought…
