I use Navionics all the time and love it. I believe they have a 14 day free trial. It shows all kinds of stuff on it. Reefs, rigs, pipelines, tides, hazards, depth, bottom contours, and much more. Highly recommended it personally.

I have faith we will be alright. Definitely going to see the worst of it the next couple days. I think most of these fish were already staging up near or in deep water. I’m hoping for the best but definitely a little concerning.

I have done most of my red fishing out in the delacroix area normally around Feb-March. I normally strictly target trout but I love the springtime red bite. One area that always seems to produce for me is around the Lake John area. I will normally start in lake john hitting any wind blown points with a popping cork. If I don’t catch any in Lake John I normally work north up pipeline canal that runs thru Lake John and fish all the points in the different bays and lagoons until it ends. Just watch the water level when going back there. If you have a crazy low tide it can get pretty shallow back there but normally it’s just fine.

As for targeting reds fishing now, I can not say for certain where they are. I have not been targeting them. We can probably expect to see some sort of redfish jubilee this week. This normally happens best in that area off the road in three places. Joe’s ditch right next to the bridge in hopedale, the canal in reggio, and just 1 or 2 miles up from Hopedale Marina at the open stretch of Bayou la Loutre. Whenever the water does warm back up a tad and the water comes back up I have done well hitting the marsh area not too far from these places and found them stacked up before.

Awesome report, I am bit surprised you didn’t do too much in the marina canal. I had a buddy whack the daylights out of the trout on the 16th by the marina. It feels like that it is pretty typical for this time of year, here today and gone tomorrow. Great way adjusting and putting fish on the deck!!

I would highly suggest Myrtle Grove for anyone fishing this weekend. They are stacked up in the marina.

I would suggest starting fishing Hopedale lagoon first. With this front coming through they should be there. Lake Amedee, Petain Lagoon, and Lake John would be my next moves. Did well in all these areas few days ago with popping cork and plastic. Best route to get to these areas is through crooked bayou. Lake four horse and Robin had smaller trout and dirty water. Thinks could have changed though with this front rolling through. Good luck this weekend, you should do well delacroix has been on fire lately.

I have done very well the past few weeks on both the incoming and falling tides. When fishing an incoming tide recently in the Hopedale / Shell Beach I have been catching them working a jig down ledges in bends of deeper bayous. When the tide starts to fall though I have been catching them on flats near those bayous. The fish are not very far!

The water temperature was 61 out there yesterday, but like you were saying I think the bridges are pretty much done with til the spring after this front.

Grand isle setups very uniquely for big trout off the road in the winter. I don’t know if this happens anywhere else, at least to the degree it does in Grand isle. As for being highly competitive, there are definitely people out there, but overall its not too bad. Just have to remember early bird gets the worm!

The bridges tend to be better whenever you get a little bit of a warming trend. If its been pretty cold I focus more on the deeper holes on the south side of Hwy 1. I could be wrong here, but I believe a long time ago they attempted to farm redfish off of Hwy 1. You will notice some of the marsh looks like ponds. They dredged these ponds out really deep to help keep the redfish alive during extended periods of heat or a freeze. Some of these ponds are 40 plus feet deep. They will stack up with trout in these holes whenever it gets really cold. As well as the culverts heading up Hwy 1 towards Leeville can be very productive too.

Definitely worth the trip down there!! I would try to plan your trip 2-3 days after a good cold front with some solid NW winds behind it. Give it a couple days to calm down and it will be on down there!

I have gotten to know Mr. Terry St. Cyr pretty well the past few years roadside fishing. I am assuming you know who he is , but what I found very interesting is that Terry strictly fishes off Hwy 1 for big trout in the winter. Another notable trout fisherman in Louisiana, Bootsie Toups, only fishes off the side of the road for big trout as well in the winter. If this isn’t saying something, I don’t know what is. Definitely worth a look if you want to target a trophy trout.
