Yall, it is bad bad down here. I’m seeing hundreds and possibly thousands of dead redfish, trout, drum, and sheepshead. This is gonna hurt. I’ll post videos later, still on the water.

    How small a boat?

If the water is not screaming and you can safely do it I would give these two a looksie. Just watch out for the Freemans doing 70 outta the pass.

Sounds like a broken sheer pin on your trolling motor.

Yep, last time I broke it was actually the last time I was in PS. I had the right tool to remove everything and almost fashioned a pin out of a straightened hook but I felt like I was burning the morning bite so I moved on. I should grab a 5 pack for boat, or a 12 pack for myself. I didnt see homie in the Natique catching either which usually makes me feel better, but it didnt.

I’m down for some freshwater fishing if you are. I’ve got some sacalait spots (roadside mainly) and my buddy has a 3 acre stocked bass pond in Norwood. I also have some good sheep spots in MS.

thank you for the feedback kind sir

“Have you ran this route before? I assume you’re good running through No Man’s Land?”

I have, and I am. The great thing about the skiff is it only drafts about 4″ while running although I did modify the route to cut through the marsh vs. around it. This was from an old map I had running down to Grand Isle so it made sense at the time.

Have you ran from 14 to 15? Looks sketchy.

Never, I’ll report back if it’s good or not. If not I’ll be pushing.

“Spots like 22 I would give very little time (or skip) because I’m not sure fish will be there now that it’s warmed up significantly.”

I have some on here as a “just in case I can’t find them shallow” alamo.

#3 is interesting. I wonder how deep it is there. That could be a great bottom stairs spot. It could be good right now.

It will be hit or miss. Last time I was there it was popping with shrimp, which you know the story there, but I’m gonna give it a try. I’ll pole it and report back.

“I think you’d be crazy not to hit those stumps by Bayou Grande.”

added and updated the kml, thanks for the reminder!

“I would cork the daylights out of Bay Lanaux.”

you da man! I really like autist cove. I’ll rizz em’ with the tism’!

Open in the chrome. That’s where I made it since it’s on my work computer and I don’t want to download personal stuff on there.

New LAFB Lesson: How to make new friends 101

I grew up with a ton of dudes that became more sucessful than me so that certainly helps.

Outside of that group, I talk about fishing a ton. My kids school has a bunch of functions, galas, birthday parties, sporting events. When I small talk I’m talking about fishing. I meet all types and if I was looking for new friends with sportfishers here’s what my strategy would be:

    1. Find common ground. Common ground is the foundation of any relationship. We do it subconciously already (they are my age, in my industry, dress like me, whatever). Start with softballs. Where you from? Any kids? What type of work do you do? Then I pivot into, any good fishing in [insert home town]? Or just what do you guys do when you’re not partying at [insert wherever yall are]? If you go on vacation, look for spots with marinas. Walk the dock and strike up a conversation.

“How many tuna did yall catch today?”

“I was told the [insert boat name] had the freshest sashimi in town. Is that true?”

“Are you guys hiring part time deckhands?”

    2. Barter. If you find someone that fishes for pelagics let them know you’ll trade them a fishing / hunting / camp trip (whatever you can offer with whatever you have) for an offshore trip. If you have nothing to offer, lay yourself bare,

“If you ever need a deckhand…”

“If you ever need someone to wash the boat…”

“If you ever need someone to show up with tacos…”

    Just let me know.

Exchange contact info. Invite them to get togethers. Be friendly.

    3. Be cool. Be flexible, offer to chip in for gas, show up with food/drinks, go out of your way to show your appreciation for the opportunity. Once you guys get comfortable tell them you’d love to do a tournament and if they ever need help to keep you in mind.

I’ve made a bunch of different friends in random ways and many of those were at my wedding 13 years ago and I’ll be at their funerals.

Making friends is easy, keeping them gets difficult, especially with a wife/kids/jobs and all of lifes other responsibilities.

    Hope this helps.

And holler at me if you want to go fishing, I’ll bring tacos. 😉

I really don’t want to pop your balloon here but I gotta warn ya.

Having worked on a billfish/tuna charter boat in my teens and from feedback from several friends most boats(not all) do not allow customers to hook the fish. You can probably guess the reasons.

For the boat I worked on, we needed a good hookset as we would could waste a lot of fuel backing down on a lipped fish. Also there’s a lot of coordination between the crew and captain during the fight and most is at the beginning and end.

So really the customer helps reel. Most of the time you’re taking turns. Tuna is great, and a lot of boats have a policy where half the fish goes to the boat. It is really so much fish, you end up giving most of it away unless you have a dedicated deep freeze.

The best way to experience it is via a friend with a sportfisher doing tournaments. Captain buys in, needs a crew he can direct, and you’re part of that crew. But its work.

This is why inshore tarpon is so appealing to me. You get to seek out monster fish that fight, jump, and pull you around. You can troll for them like tuna & billfish or just chill in the middle of the lake and wait for them to show up. I can’t wait to chase them again this summer.
