The week went great. Caught our limit of speckled trout in the “jump” close to the river on the couple of days we targeted them. Had fun catching juvenile reds just off the river where channels come off the river. Caught 3 bull reds and many big cats in the channels that are on the river. Seems like we had to be into the channel a ways to get the bull red and big cats. Thanks for the help and love this site. Might get back there around March before it starts getting too hot for me.

MemberMarch 25, 2025 at 11:10 am in reply to: Venice Area Fishing for the week starting 3/16Fished close to Venice Marina for about 3 hours Sunday. Water is muddy, water temp about 53ish, caught small catfish only. Monday we went to the bottom of SW Pass, weather was great w/blue skies. There were 7 of us and everyone caught at least one bull red. All were about 33″. We fished with shrimp on the bottom by the way. Tuesday we went on the pass just under the wagon wheel, to the Gulf of whatever and fished at an oil rig. Caught a ton of sheep heads, some of which were pretty big. Wednesday we went to YCB and the wind was about 15mph or so from the NW which may not seem bad until you try to cross the bay in open water. My first time there. That was one shallow bay unless your in the channels and water temp is pushing 64 degrees. Fished the south end and caught little stuff. Went around the west end and two of us got a bull red in like 1 foot of water with a popping cork rig. Thursday was a bust with the wind like around 30mph. Not working with our bass boats unless we stayed close to the marina and the fishing there was not good. All in all it was a fun trip, caught a lot of fish, everyone got a big red. Fishing is so much better the first week of December but it was great to get out and try it.

Running a bass boat. Fishing the mouth of Tiger Pass and Red Pass is easy enough for us to try. We can shoot for Southwest Pass also. Love the advice, thanks so much.

Yes. The weather looks like it will be breezy around 15mph from the north, northeast and sunny most days if my app is correct. Tides appear to me are going to be falling not very much early till 9-10am, then rising not very much after that. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t know enough about tides to even pretend to know much on that. Your lessons helped alot though. You may help me on this but I’m thinking of going down Grand Pass first thing in the morning and fishing the channels that might be flowing water into Grand Pass. I’m also wanting to fish the same way along Sugar Lake Bayou at the Tiger Pass and others. At some point during the week, I’ll fish the “jump” area as it’s called around there or the channel that goes to the Mississippi.
Got any advice on this? I only get the one week a year at this. Been going there for 5 years. Last year I caught 11 Bull Reds, a few specs, and alot of other species. I’ll admit it, I go there to catch big fish that fight really good. I fish with white shrimp and I’ll throw gulp shrimp that are the ghost color and new penny.
