I understand MOST of it. lol

Which is great, because I’m gathering that Lake P. Is a quirky place to fish.

The discussion has helped me think deeper a lot deeper about what went on yesterday. As opposed to just walking away with no lessons learned.

    Lessons I’ve learned:

    – If I ain’t losing lures at the trestles I’m not doing it right.”

    – Keep learning conditions and fish them. Don’t chase YouTuber around just because he’s a pro. There’s more than meets the eye.

    – LAFB Elite is a bargain.

Thing #1: The tide was rising but the water was definitely moving WEST to EAST. I think it’s because the wind was out of the NW.

Thing #2 and 2.5: I probably sucked at this. I lost ZERO lures and was only snagged a handful of times. In hindsight, subconsciously not wanting to go through the headache of losing lures I was retrieving too fast. Also, in hindsight, I have no business fishing the trestles if I’m not willing to pay the price of frustration with losing lures there.

    Lesson learned.

Thing #7: Yeah, I’m confused then on the reason the water was moving WEST to EAST. I’m wracking my brain on this. But I was parked on the East side of the tracks. And when I spotlocked, my kayak pointed into the wind in a northwest direction, toward the tracks. .

When I cast toward the trestles, into the wind, it would push my lure back toward me.

Thing #8: He was doing the same thing I was doing. Casting toward the trestles and retrieving with the current. Soft plastics.

Thing #9: I suspect this as well. And, once again, I understand the “marketing” aspect of his. I just don’t want to get distracted from learning actual good technique.

    Thank you, Captain.

Was planning on going to Hopedale tomorrow to “popping cork & drift” tomorrow.

Alas, I have to deliver a golf cart to Houma.

Was thinking of bringing my kayak and fishing somewhere in that area.

I watched your Lake DeCad video.

    I know that’s near Houma.

Never been there to know if my powered kayak would get the job done.

    Thanks for the reply, Captain.

I can totally see the whole psychology of lazily sticking to what was “relatively successful” in the past.

    Re: Hopedale.

At the risk of being lazy, although that’s not my intent, I can go fishing this Monday or Tuesday with my powered kayak.

    What I’ve done so far:

TIDE: The tide looks to be rising about a foot with slack tide (I think) being 5pm

WIND: The wind will be blowing 10-11mph from the North in the morning and gradually dying down to 5-6 in the afternoon.

TEMPERATURE: The temperature looks to be 55-65 degrees.

If I’ve gotten this right, when the tide rises one rule of thumb is to fish the points because the water is pushing the bait into the cuts and along the way they get caught up on the points where fish ambush them.

As far as the effect of the wind on the tide at Hopedale. If the tide is rising a foot and the wind is blowing from the north…Honestly, I have no idea how this would affect the tide. lol.

I’m looking at GED and can see all the cuts and points. And my powered kayak can cover 5-7 miles of water.

Not asking you to do my homework for me, but what else do I need to be looking at if I’m planning a trip to Hopedale Monday or Tuesday?

One difference I’m noticing is a huge wind change on TUESDAY. The wind is switching and coming out of the south at around 10MPH with another 1 foot rising tide throw out the day.

FYI: I’m using the Shell Beach; Lake Borge tide station for the tidal info.

Congrats on the book, Devin. I’ve published two of them and, as you know, it’s a lot of hard work. Well done.

I agree about the legacy thing and think it’s noble of you to pursue that. The word needs more of that kind of passion and thinking outside of oneself.

I was not a part of LAFB Elite when it was on Facebook. I’m glad the platform is your exclusive domain, personally.

Keep up the good work, brother.

    Thank you, Captain!

Loving this trolling idea after watching those videos.

Yes, my kayak would be perfect for that.

It easily adjusts speeds that tops out at 4mph and can control direction with my feet.

    Ok. Thanks for the tip.

Also, you had made earlier mention of using a lighter weight jig head at the trestles.

What is the reason for this? I assume it is to keep from sinking to the bottom.

However, I’m on of your YouTube videos, you were teaching the necessity of letting line out after a cast near the piling so the lure could sink to the bottom instead of swinging out on a shallower arc.

Yes, the kayak makes unsnaggimg easier.

Have you ever tried a weedless jig head there?

Valuable response, Captain. This helps because I had the thought when I got home, “Should I have switched sides because that’s where Chaz was?”

    The answer is “No”.

The reason is because I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DOING WHAT CHAZ WAS DOING. For all the reasons you mentioned.

This tells me to keep learning as much proper technique as I can. And enjoy the process in the meantime.

As far as him giving slack to get to the bottom, that’s exactly what he was doing.

He would let the lure fall. Then after giving his three pops he would let it fall all the way again.

Re: lure color. Thank you! I totally get it. He’s making a living doing this and I don’t blame him for promoting his “color of the day.” I just don’t want to get all hyped up and chase after something that actually has nothing to do with proper fishing technique. And from your answer, the color on this day had nothing to do with fishing technique.
