What Devin said. You might also try launching at Spicers and fishing Kelso bayou east to the ship channel, and west into those canals that run to the salt ditch/black lake. Turners bay up to haymark have been a bit muddy most of the past month or so but a few keeper trout to be had there, so I’d imagine Kelso would might be similar. Another option is launching in west cove canal on the refuge and giving that a shot, along the west cove shoreline to oyster bayou but I’m not familiar with the current conditions there.

It’s great that you were able to get your friend on some fish. I’d like to have fished Saturday but it didn’t work out. Enjoying yalls reports till I can get back on the water.

Devin, I hope to be in SWLA. Probably hitting a few spots from Prien Lake down to the turners bay area on Big Lake. A few things need to fall into place for me to get there, but I’m hoping.

That beetle certainly looks gnawed on. Great trip. I’m hoping to make it out this weekend also.

    “Consistent and violent”

    “Flying out the water….toilet flushes”

It sounds like a really fun trip. Anxious for my next opportunity!

I was on Big Lake that day also. The water at calcasieu point was as muddy as I’ve ever seen it. I caught no keepers in turners bay, 1 keeper up at haymark terminal and nothing in the LNG canal. There were a few reds and drum on the cleaning table at the marina that afternoon, from around the old jetties on the south end of the lake im told. I didnt have the boat for that run. Like you mentioned, it was a fine day to be on the water regardless. In those areas, salinity has crept up very little since then, but I do hope to be there again soon.

My apologies, I had black lake on tbe brain and that’s what I mistakenly read in your post. I did hear of a decent trout bite in turners prior the the snow, but haven’t personly been south of LNG/Calcasieu point lately.

I miss that area, fished it alot till about 20 years ago and have been thinking about it lately. In spring I personally used to do better with redfish in black lake, along the eastern shoreline and along a pipeline that ran east-west. I know many others have done well on trout in BL I always did better with spring trout fishing the bends in Kelso bayou just to the east, all the way out to the ship channel. Again, I haven’t been there in many years but hope to make a trip or two this year. Sorry I’m not more help.

    Hi Devin,

I grew up near Big Lake and have done most of my trout and redfishing there and in the lower mermentau area. I’m hoping to spend more time back over there. I currently live in the BR area. I used to make a couple trips each summer to Lake borne, Lake Pontchartrain, grand isle and fourchon but haven’t trout/red fished those places recently. I did some fair winter trout fishing recently in the lake charles/prien area and that’s what’s got me feeling fishy again. I really like what you’ve got here!

Thanks Boyce, looking forward to it. Spent time in 101 this evening and am amazed by the volume of content. I’d never been properly analytical in my approach to trout in my early years and this interaction will certainly help, always something new to learn.
