I love the heavy drop shot. Devin has an awesome video about it on the new channel.
I think you can work it like a jig (kind of), but more small movements rather than large pulls. Basically, if you have 12″ in between the bait and weight and have a tight line, you should be close to the strike zone for when they are at the bottom. So even a slow straight retrieve would theoretically keep the bait in the target zone.

As for fishing that mid-range depth in deep waters, that is a good question. I’m sure someone will have a better idea than I, but with a 1/2 – 3/4oz jig head, I would cast and count to 15-20 second and then start a straight retrieve. Also at that depth, you might be able to to just drop it straight down and slowly troll over the top of them. Idk, just a thought.
